Optimal Aging Month | September 2017By Mayoral Decree, this September is Optimal Aging Month! For the third consecutive year, the UofL Institute for Sustainable Health & Optimal Aging is hosting Optimal Aging Month. This awareness month seeks to inspire and encourage people to learn about the concept of optimal aging. Our Optimal Aging Month is part of a national observation of Healthy Aging Month. Featured Events: 9/1 - 9/9Sunday, September 3 | Feria de Salud (Health Fair) Join us for a health fair and soccer tournament at the start of Optimal Aging Month! In addition to a cook out and soccer games, the Institute will have a tent set up providing a variety of health screenings, including blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol, weight, and vision. This health fair is a culminating event of the Institute's IHOP grant, which created comprehensive, culturally sensitive preventative care systems and strategies for a rural Latino food pantry.

MI utilizes a nonconfrontational, collaborative effort between the professional or lay support person and community member to spark motivation and initiate change. A signature Optimal Aging Month event, the Gold Standard Award for Optimal Aging celebrates and honors older adults who embody the Institute’s vision for a world where all older adults lead engaged and flourishing lives. This award recognizes older adults who are 85 years or older and who are outstanding models of optimal aging in the following four categories: physical, social, spiritual and creative. Congratulations to all the nominees and awardees - your stories and passion for life are inspiring to us all. **** Saturday, September 9 | Alzheimer's Association Walk to End Alzheimer's Join us in walking to end Alzheimer's! The Institute is forming a team for the walk - we would love to have you join us! This month's luncheon meeting is sponsored by Today's Transitions. Join us and the Health & Services Providers Network for an interactive conversation on the importance of age-friendly cities and the progress Louisville is making in this area. **** Thursday, September 21 | Centenarian Event The Kentuckiana Regional Planning and Development Agency (KIPDA), through its Social Services Division is hosting a celebration honoring centenarians who reside in the KIPDA region. Appreciating the many virtues that local centenarians have to offer, KIPDA will pay tribute to those in attendance as well as those in the community that cannot attend.
