Optimal Aging Month 2016 is filled with exciting events and opportunities that raise awareness for and promote the concept of Optimal Aging! 

Optimal aging is the ability to flourish throughout one's lifetime. It is a new understanding of the aging process in which intergenerational, compassionate communities have all the resources available for people to lead physically, socially, and emotionally healthy lives from birth to death.

Wednesday, September 14 | Optimal Aging Lecture Series*


Which PATH Will You Choose?

This Optimal Aging Month, we invite you to join the Institute and the UofL Alumni Association for a discussion on a new intervention 
designed to promote optimal aging for older adults, the “PATH” Program - a psychoeducational approach to transcendence and health. This innovative and creative program fosters self-transcendence to improve well-being, life satisfaction, and quality of life for older adults.

Wednesday, September 21 | 20 Mindful Minutes Kick-off at the Institute

Drop in for a guided relaxation & meditation or to simply sit in a quiet, calm space. Meditation will be held from 11:30 am - 12:00 pm. 20 Mindful Minutes will be held on September 21, October 5, 12, 19, & 26, November 2, & 16.

Thursday, September 22 | The Digital Experience For Seniors:  An Open Discussion*

Facebook, computers, smart phones - oh my!  We want to know what you think about digital media and technology. The Louisville-based tech start-up Gyroskope is developing a solution and they are looking for your feedback and opinions to ensure their final product delivers a delightful experience for seniors. We invite individuals 65 and older to an open discussion about how seniors think and feel about technology, and to provide feedback on the Gyroskope Family Network, a new platform that is being designed specifically to help non-digital natives enjoy the benefits of the digital experience.

Wednesday, September 28 | Lightning Round Speaker Series

Join us for lunch! This active and participatory session, provided by the Institute for Sustainable Health & Optimal Aging in partnership with SMART’s Wellness Task Force, will feature three interactive presentations on mind, body and spirit interventions that can help you age optimally across your lifespan. Enjoy an evening of good old-fashioned fun at the inaugural Haymarket Hootenanny! There will be family-friendly activities, live music, silent auction, street food, and beer, wine & spirits. Signature cocktails will be provided by Butchertown Grocery. This event seeks to raise $25,000+ to aid Elder Serve.
